LOOK!

In the writing of LOOK!

LOOK! is a full length stage play set around Charles Haddon Spurgeon’s last winter in Mentone, France. In this historical fiction, an ex-patriot American relocates to London, England as a journalist who obtains permission to go to Mentone to interview Pastor Spurgeon. However, he goes with an ulterior motive: why did his wife and daughters have to die?

As for Pastor Spurgeon, his wife, Susie, brother, James, and executive secretary little did they know Charles wouldn’t return to London alive from Mentone, France. Surely, God’s providence came into play because this was the first time ever that his beloved Susie and his brother joined him in Mentone. Earlier in 1891, he preached a sermon that seemed to eerily indicate he didn’t believe his days on earth would last much longer. On May 17, 1891, he preached ‘My Times are in Thy Hand.’ That autumn, he and his entourage went to Mentone, France – as he had for the past 20 years – to rehabilitate from his struggles with gout and a kidney disorder. He died there, January 31, 1892.

THE FOLLOWING SERMONS WERE INSPIRATIONAL TO ME IN THE WRITING OF

LOOK!

Deliver me from the hand of my enemies,
And from those who persecute me.” (NJKV)

HARVEST TIME – 1 Samuel 12:17

Is today not the wheat harvest? I will call to the LORD, and He will send thunder and rain, that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking a king for yourselves.”

HAND OF GOD IN THE HISTORY OF A MAN – Job 7:1

Is there not a time of hard service for man on earth?
Are not his days also like the days of a hired man? (NKJV)
