America, America… You bring me to think of Jesus standing on the hillside, calling out to Jerusalem, ‘Jerusalem… Jerusalem… if only you turned to me. I don’t know how many of my brothers and sisters share this thought, but I find myself calling out to God in behalf of my country… its leadership… that God would be merciful… forgive our land. No doubt I have brothers and sisters in many nations… who love their people and their land. They’re praying for the same thing. They call out. We call out because we know the reality of what is to come (even as Jesus saw the coming of the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D.) That, and we know that only God can draw us to him, quickening us.
“Pay attention!” says the Spirit. “Wake up!”
I know that the notion is confusing that God must make it happen. Why wouldn’t God simply draw everyone? He loves everyone, right? I’m sure most people have heard John 3:16… now, I can’t say they truly heard it. Only those whom God gave the ears to hear, heard what the prophets, Jesus and the apostles cried out of the wilderness. Sadly, the church hasn’t provided a faithful echo throughout the generations. But there is Good News! Born as a boomer, my prayer is that we’re at that point generationally that the Holy Spirit will sweep across America… the world… and making it a booming. That’s my prayer for you: boomer to booming.
