Several months had passed since Hup and Cordia went back to mother’s church. They returned hoping to bring their Lord’s merciful grafting of the true vine back into mother’s vineyard. Hup and Cordia brought different gifts – as the Wise men who followed a hallowed star to that humble abode. As Solomon was gifted, Hup and Cordia were likewise in their own ways and shared concern about the condition of God’s Holy kingdom on earth. Was it difficult for Hup to humble himself before Jones and Wilder? Yes, but he did. Did he apologize? No, not exactly. Although an offense was possible, God knew his heart. If he had sinned, yes, he would’ve asked forgiveness – first God’s. But only to make nice? No, Hup and Cordia agreed that was not the way, the truth or the life they wanted to live. To effect meaningful change, the seeking of forgiveness must be accompanied by true sorrow and contrition. What had happened between Hup and the two deacons wasn’t a matter of addressing sin. Did Hup agree that combining a Bible Study with a wine tasting could be seen as a gluttonous Corinthian banquet? Yes, he said in answer to the deacons.
“Yes, but!” he said, “It could also be seen as Upper Room.”
And with that said, and the awkwardness of returning to mother’s church dealt with, Hup and Cordia attended with the hope of bringing other runners to the line… some to the starting, others to the finish. That was God’s work to do through them, but it wasn’t long before Hup began to toss and turn at night… wrestling with the Lord as did Jacob, but Hup saw himself running up and down the ladder… as a hod carrier loaded down with bricks. Night after sleepless night… where was the one that his soul loved… longed for? He had no doubt that he stood behind the lattice, watching through the generational openings where Father poured out his blessing… a fountain’s stream of living water. He didn’t quake in abandonment, but his was a holy fear, and anxiety… there were so many souls that Hup and Cordia wanted to see among the chosen.
