Who is EULA MAE TARKINGTON?  

Eula Mae Tarkington is a seventy-five-year-old widow of Choctaw County, Alabama. Five feet tall, ninety-five pounds. White hair. Hands that have saddled horses, turned wrenches, and run Tarkington land: oil, pulp, pecans, Angus.

She is Carl Tarkington’s widow, mother of ten conceived—five who lived, five who did not. Judy came home from Afghanistan without her hearing. Toby died on the county road. Gary Lee left as a boy and returned a man. Isaiah Gorham has worked the stables since 1968.

On the morning of her seventy-fifth birthday, before first light, the Lord greeted her and told her to write a memorial. She had spent most of a lifetime keeping the peace and staying out of the way. The writing does not make her conventional. It makes her honest.
