How I praise God that I have in Jesus an advocate and not a lawyer! Jesus, as our advocate, appeals to the mercies of God, the Father; who eternally reigns as Chief Justice and Judge. In Christ, we have the advocacy of His blood that is at the heart of His appeal made on our behalf; His heart, poured out and body broken for us… blotting out any record of our sin.
For unrepentant sinners? That’s another story. They will stand before the bar of God and be told they will have a court appointed lawyer; not an advocate. At that point, the sinner might think, ‘surely it must be an angel who can argue the law! They have observed it for eons!’ Yes, there is, but then he’d learn his hopes were dashed when told that that particular angel was cast out from heaven for doing just that… arguing the law of God. He himself, along with his minions that followed, stood apart pending judgment.
No, each sinner will be told they must defend themselves. If nothing could be worse, they would next learn that their very own conscience would betray them by becoming the witness for the prosecution. In anger, the sinner would cry out in protest, ‘My conscience is mine! I have hid it from all and it shall remain hidden!’
‘No, you are mistaken. I am the giver of life and soul. Your conscience was never yours, and unless the record of your sin was expunged by the blood of the Lamb, your conscience is Today first witness, prosecutor, and eternal jail keeper and tormenter.’
