Millpond Ink Musings: Of The Peddlers

In 2 Cor. 2:16, we read that the Word is either the savor of life unto life; or death unto death. However, I must ask what is it that we hear? Do we hear something preached possibly taken from the Bible but intended for other ends? The ends that are mostly preached today and the fragrance wafted is of life as we want it now. No wonder Paul follows in verse 17 by addressing the ‘peddlers.’ They are the false prophets and teachers whom, with the devil’s assistance, know exactly what to say to those who have itchy ears and are covetous; those spiritually bankrupt but are told to expect a jubilee.

The true Word of God; as it is preached by those anointed by Christ, is the message of Christ and Him crucified. To the elect, it is a sweet aroma that they follow to life; to the lost? It is a stench…a joke…a myth that drives them away but can only lead to death.

And….

At some point along the road, the peddlers; who knowingly started out to preach falsehood in order to mislead others for gain, will come to believe their spew is as tasty and appetizing as if it came from heaven’s culinary, Jesus. Such is the arrogance of man and his home cooking… that whatever comes from an earthly kitchen can ever compare with God’s manna and the sweetness of His delicacies; seasoned by His grace, mercy and love.
