When the conversation about men’s souls and eternity is neglected for the sake of time spent in the discussion of the politics of men and its temporal consequences, Satan may have effectively taken the Christian out of the Gospel race during that time. We must be wise. As Jesus set His face towards Jerusalem, he turned aside a meeting with some Hellenist Greeks who wanted to meet him. That time was not right. The time had come for Christ to face his religious accusers and the cross. No, I submit, we must have within us what C.H. Spurgeon called the ‘holy anxiety’ that should first drive us to win the souls of men given the fact that our Lord may return at any hour. That is not to say that our heavenly Father might not have given us a voice in the governance of men, but it will be an effectual voice, with purpose, as Jesus demonstrated when he tore down the booths of the money-changers and the other sellers of earthly wares in the temple courtyard. When in the courtyard of the politicians and religious leaders, yes – speak! Act, as a citizen of Rome! Our Great Comforter will empower you for it is the will of the Father. But to be truthful, the discussion of anything but Christ, and Him crucified outside of the courtyard is likely the fowler’s snare.
