Of Theologians

So, what is a theologian? That thought struck me this morning when the author of my daily devotion referred to King David as one. I thought, King, yes; prophet, yes; man after God’s own heart; definitely but a theologian? That was odd. It wasn’t until I considered the latter truth: David was a man after God’s heart that I understood. You see we make theologians out to be anyone who studies and who speaks as if they know about God (and a lot of the time I don’t know the god they’re talking about!)

Anyway, the theologian as God defines him or her? God knows them and they desire to know Him on a more personal basis over the course of their lives (notice I didn’t say daily. While it’s spiritual to say, it’s not human and from time to time we falter. Of course, that’s not to say that after our falter God doesn’t use that to reveal more about Himself as He restores us, but that’s a matter of His mercy so don’t push it.)

Nonetheless, He first reveals; we desire; He wills; we desire… All so that we come to know Him more and more so that we adore Him and enjoy Him evermore.

Now, that’s theology at its finest.
