AS SMALL AS A MUSTARD SEED
UNFOLDING FORTY
WHERE ARE WE
Do you have a garden? Do you work that garden? One seed sown will produce a plant or tree after its own kind, and as God wills, that plant or tree shall reproduce many seeds after its kind. What is your kind? If you are of the living seed – the seed of Christ – then you will reflect His characteristics; share in His ministry.
SCRIPTURE
Luke 13:19
“It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.”
AS SMALL AS A MUSTARD SEED
UNFOLDING FORTY
Pastor opened –
“We have seen that he sowed: what did he sow? It was one single seed, and that seed a very small one; so very, very small, that the Jews were accustomed to say, ‘As small as a mustard seed.'”
Yes, t’was small but –
“… though very small, was a living thing.”
Moreover,
“There is a great difference between a mustard seed and a piece of wax of the same size. Life slumbers in that seed.”
And while life slumbers…
“A seed is a very comprehensive thing. Within the mustard seed what is to be found? Why, there is all in it that ever comes out of it.”
And for that reason…
“… it is a divine creation.”
Can you make a mustard seed? Can anyone? Take all the time that you need. I wait for you to make me one.
And yet to sow one seed…
“It is always an act of faith to sow seed, because you have, for the time, to give it up, and receive nothing in return.”
The rule of the harvest?
“According to thy faith, be it done unto thee.”
Finally, why did Jesus select the mustard seed? He could have chosen an Oak or a cedar. Why?
“He selected it because it is the greatest result as compared with the size of the seed.”
THOUGHT GOING FORWARD
Indeed, it is always a matter of faith when we sow. Why is that? Because no matter who we are there is that reality that confronts us: we cannot make anything happen and what we sow, we hope has life. No, we can not put life into what doesn’t have life. Many sow pieces of wax. They believe the piece has life, but it does not, and that is why nothing comes out of the ground. However, for those who plant the living seed of truth in faith, those shall spring forth out of the ground.
IN TRIBUTE TO SPURGEON’S LOVE OF SHORT RYHMES
The smallest of seeds were chosen –
and grace brought me life to forsake!
Before, all my sins, I lay sleeping –
’til a first breath of heaven I’d take.
