Do We Attend to Our Souls?

I enjoy my early morning hours… waking to meditate and to talk to my heavenly Father, and the Lord Jesus. This morning, I thought about my soul; as well as the souls of others – family, friends, neighbors, and generally across the world. Sadly, we don’t spend a lot of time considering our souls. In America, our time is mostly spent enhancing our physical appearance… feeding our intellect… stabilizing our emotional well being (good luck there) and yes, satisfying our lusts, which can harm – even destroy our bodies – as well as our souls.

Now, assuming you believe you have a soul, and that your soul is eternal, you’d probably agree the amount of time we spend in tending to ourselves emotionally, intellectually, and physically is disproportionately greater than the time we spend spiritually attending to our hearts, minds, and souls… as strengthened and nourished through our study of God’s Word…prayer and meditation… fellowship with believers… (I was going to say ‘likeminded believers’ but that is rarely the case, depending upon the subject. Keep the subject to Christ, and Him crucified, we’re good to go. As for a number of other subjects, it’s probably best I go.)

Anyway, wherever our interests lay – and the amount of time we spend – that is a clear indication of who God is in our lives, and how much our soul matters to us. We are called to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Yes, we’re called to, but as Jesus said, ‘Many are called but few are chosen.’ Of course, I know how that sounds… spiritual elitism? No, the reality of Jesus in my life compels me to think about you and others. It’s not elitism… nor escapism, as my brother told me years ago. Nope. It’s a matter that every man, woman and child must and will answer. Just know I’m praying for you.
